Family/Homeownership FAQ

How can I apply for a home built by Habitat for Humanity?

Interested applicants must attend a Family Seminar.  These are scheduled throughout the year. Applicants must meet certain qualifications and the application process is lengthy (between 3 and 12 months.) All information is kept confidential. Please see Application Process (link) for detailed information about the process.  To register to attend the Family Seminar, call 972-542-5300. Pre-registration materials are sent to those who register.

How are families selected?

Habitat for Humanity is not a give-away program. The Family Selection Committee ensures applicants qualify for the program and have a housing need.  See Application Process for details (link). Families must have the ability to:

  • Make payments* for 20 years
  • Work at least 300 “sweat equity” hours with NCC Habitat

*The mortgage payment includes taxes and insurance.

What kind of appliances and furnishings are included in the houses?

The houses include refrigerators and stoves, which are donated by Whirlpool. The houses do not include furnishings or other appliances, such as dishwashers, garbage disposals, or clothes washers/dryers.

I would like to help these families directly. Is that permitted?

Absolutely! Gifts should not exceed more than $1,500 in value. Here are some possible suggestions:

  • Wish List Items: Each family completes a wish list of items they need.
  • Appliances: The houses do not come with certain appliances, like dishwashers and garbage disposals.

Please note that gifts/items which are specified for a specific family are not receipted. Why? We give receipts.  Also, Habitat for Humanity does not encourage monetary donations given directly to families. Our organization provides “a hand up, not a hand-out.” Contact our office for additional details.
